Running the laptop speed test
Open this page in a normal browser tab and tap the start button. The test auto-sizes itself to your connection, so it works on Wi-Fi, cellular and wired connections alike.
Background app refreshes, cloud photo sync and automatic updates can quietly consume bandwidth while you measure; pausing them for the thirty seconds a test takes makes the result much cleaner.
Your result vs your plan
Write down your result, then compare it with the speed tier your ISP sells you. If you consistently see a fraction of the advertised speed over Wi-Fi, retest over Ethernet before blaming the provider.
ISPs advertise maximums, not guarantees. Over Ethernet you can often see the full tier; over Wi-Fi, expect a fraction depending on distance and walls.
A realistic baseline
Battery-saver modes can reduce network throughput on phones; for a measurement, connecting to power or disabling low-power modes gives a truer reading.
Operating-system updates are a common hidden variable: a freshly updated device can spend minutes on background work that pulls throughput away from your test.
If you test on a phone and a computer on the same network, expect different numbers — the radio antenna and network stack of each device participate in the result.
Making the result useful

Speed test limitations
Wi-Fi adds its own variability. If your wired connection is much faster than your Wi-Fi, the bottleneck is your wireless link, not your ISP — and that is worth knowing before you call your provider.
Upload speeds can be throttled or capped separately from downloads on some plans, so a fast download with a slow upload is often the plan working as designed rather than a fault.
