Running the mac speed test

Just open the page and press start — the tool figures out the right test size on its own, whether you're on broadband or a mobile hotspot.

Close bandwidth-heavy apps before measuring. On phones, make sure you are not connected to a VPN or using a data-saver mode, since those route traffic differently.

Comparing with your plan

Measure twice over Ethernet, then again on Wi-Fi. Big gaps between the two mean the wireless link — not the plan — is your bottleneck.

Network congestion in the evening can pull a 300 Mbps plan down to noticeably less at peak hours; testing a few times across the day shows the realistic range, not just the best case.

What the test can and can't show

Some laptops throttle Wi-Fi performance when on battery; plugging in before a serious test removes that variable.

Battery-saver modes can reduce network throughput on phones; for a measurement, connecting to power or disabling low-power modes gives a truer reading.

Operating-system updates are a common hidden variable: a freshly updated device can spend minutes on background work that pulls throughput away from your test.

Speed test limitations

This test measures throughput to Cloudflare's edge, not to every service you use. Remote work, gaming or streaming servers may route differently and show different performance.

A speed test measures your connection to our test server, which typically lives on the same backbone your ISP peers with. Speeds to other destinations can vary with routing, server load, and the websites you use.
