What happens when you run it

Instead of forcing one fixed download on everyone, the tool adapts: it sends progressively larger payloads and stops the moment the estimate stabilizes.

Each pass of the measurement reads the payload directly from Cloudflare's edge and times how long the transfer actually takes, so the growing ladder reflects your real throughput rather than a guess.

Adaptive testing also means the test is gentle on mobile data plans: it stops transferring as soon as the estimate is statistically stable.

How to read your result

Download speed is usually the biggest number on a result screen because most plans are asymmetric, and it is the figure most ISPs advertise most loudly.

Some jitter is normal on any connection; very high jitter (roughly 20 ms or more of variation) is what you'll notice as choppy calls or rubber-banding in games.

What moves the needle

Whether you test over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the distance to your router, how many devices share the connection, and whether your ISP throttles specific traffic can all move the numbers.

Testing against Cloudflare's anycast network gives a realistic picture of real-world throughput because the measured path is short and well-connected.

Making the result useful

This test is free, requires no account, and never shows ads while it runs — the only goal of the measurement is to give you a trustworthy number as quickly as possible.

The result screen labels the server you measured against, so you always know exactly what path a number represents before you compare it with anything else.

Run the test a few times over a few days before drawing conclusions. One-off speeds are noisy; a median of several runs is a much more reliable picture of your connection.

Speed test limitations

Wi-Fi adds its own variability. If your wired connection is much faster than your Wi-Fi, the bottleneck is your wireless link, not your ISP — and that is worth knowing before you call your provider.

Upload speeds can be throttled or capped separately from downloads on some plans, so a fast download with a slow upload is often the plan working as designed rather than a fault.
